An Irish Perspective on the Prelude to the IRA

I read this first years and years ago and still is one of my favorites. I loves it intertwining of historical events with the story of an Irish family. Leon Uris is one my favorite authors and this book does not disappoint.

Read it Again as Soon as I Finished it

Just like it says, one second after I finished this great story, I flipped back to the first page and read it again. I could tell that Conor got all of his great spiritual and physical strength from his father and grandfar, Tomas and Kilty. I grew so attached to Conor Larkin I wanted to name my son after him. It seemed like such a good, strong name. Actually, in a way, I did name my son after him. Uris put so much passion and honest feeling in this story, I can't begin to explain how it affected my life. An absolute must read!

This book was undoubtedly one of the best books I have read. It runs through the latter part of 19th century Ireland with a historically accurate, heart wrenching portrayal of people who found themselves intertwined with their country's fate.
I feel as if even reviewing this book is an pointless endeavour. It is a classic. It is amazing. It might even change your life. In the least it will present themes and feelings wrapped up in history that will teach you more than you bargined for.

Beautiful. Maybe the best book I've ever read.

Maybe the best book I've ever read. I'm not a scholar. I can't tell you about Dickens, Shakespeare, Tolstoy, etc. I can only tell you this book was incredible. It's very detailed, colorful, rich, beautiful, vivid, and tragic. It's size is intimidating, but once I got started, I could not stop. This is historical fiction. Most of the characters are not real, but their circumstances are real. The background history it gives about Ireland, as well as the contemporary issues the characters face, are real. If you want to understand why Ireland is the way it is now, and where the IRA evolved from and why, then you have to read this book. It's a long saga with with lots of details, but it is a very easy read. I never got confused about who did or said what. It is simply amazing that someone could put together a story of this beautiful.

What a great read

Trinity
I read this book when I was doing a lot of international travel.
I first carted the HARD cover version around the world then finally decided to read it on a flight to Singapore. OMG. What a great read.
Out of the corner of my ear one night not long ago, I heard someone talking about a book they read on Ireland that had them riveted and I just knew it was this book. What a great read. We both thought so.

Product Description

From the acclaimed author who enthralled the world with Exodus, Battle Cry, QB VII, Topaz, and other beloved classics of twentieth-century fiction comes a sweeping and powerful epic adventure that captures the "terrible beauty" of Ireland during its long and bloody struggle for freedom. It is the electrifying story of an idealistic young Catholic rebel and the valiant and beautiful Protestant girl who defied her heritage to join his cause. It is a tale of love and danger, of triumph at an unthinkable cost -- a magnificent portrait of a people divided by class, faith, and prejudice -- an unforgettable saga of the fires that devastated a majestic land . . . and the unquenchable flames that burn in the human heart.
