| The Shadow of the Wind by Penguin (Non-Classics) Completely Lost... | | I finished this book at precisely 1:15am this morning. That is about 36 hours after I started reading it. I couldn't put it down, but I had to in order to do tasks such as eating, bathing, and going to work! The first thing I did this morning was to open this book from the very beginning and once again, enter the haunting world of The Shadow of the Wind. It's a heartbreaking tale that twists and subplots down the most awesome rabbit holes. I loved every single page and laughed out loud through Zafon's amazing and colorful voice. This is a must, MUST, MUST read that you will never forget. The best thing is of course...The End. | | The Shadow of the Wind by Penguin (Non-Classics) A must read | | This is a great book! It has a incredibly interesting story that will totally keep you guessing what happens next. It is also very well written which is sometimes hard to find in a book, but I think this one has the whole package going on. Read it! | | The Shadow of the Wind by Penguin (Non-Classics) terribly overrated. | I could not believe the legion of rave reviews for this book. It was trite and melodramatic. The translation was bad . . .I'd expect more from the daughter of Robert Graves: i.e., just how common was the use of the word "ecosystem" in the early 1950's?; I assume that the main character was "nauseated" and not "nauseous" ....although the whole book was "nauseous" to me; and a spider is not an insect.
I staggered to the 400- plus page finish line. . . . at the end, all I could think of was that there are so many books out there to read, so little time, and I wasted valuable reading time on this. I know I'm going against the grain here . . . perhaps I'm just missing something. | | The Shadow of the Wind by Penguin (Non-Classics) Finally, a literary, mystery romance story! | | Having purchased this book on the advice of a friend who raved about it, I did not expect it to live up to her rather effusive praise. After a few chapters, I was hooked by the language, the story, and the questions raised by the author. I literally was riveted to the novel the last 100 pages and constantly surprised by the unconventional twists and turns that the story took that I had not expected. The characters, with a few exceptions, are fully drawn and believable, even if somewhat surreal in some cases. I hesitate to give too much away as you must read the book to appreciate its appeal. I worried about the novel's being a translation, but once I started reading it, never gave that aspect another thought. For a highly unusual and literary read, give this book a try! | | The Shadow of the Wind by Penguin (Non-Classics) One of the most captivating stories ever | | The Shadow of the Wind was a book I randomly picked up ages ago. I have no idea what drew me to it, but I recently discovered it on my shelf, took it down and figured I'd actually read it. By the time I turned to page two, I knew I was in for a treat. I can only read in English, so I have no idea if the original Spanish is as elegant as the translation, but I was immediately wrapped in language so wonderful that even if the story had turned out to be mundane, I knew the experience of reading the book would be a delight. In the end, the story captured my imagination to such an extent I could hardly put the novel down to take care of the daily things one needs to take care of. I found myself wandering off into day dreams thinking about the characters I'd left on my table at home. I pondered where the story could go. I marveled at each unexpected plot turn. Finally I finished the book, closed it and, unbelievably, I wept. Something about the story, the language and the experience of reading this book so took hold of me that I was emotionally drained upon closing it for the final time. Pick up this book. It is a rare treat. | | The Shadow of the Wind by Penguin (Non-Classics) Product Description | | Barcelona, 1945—A great world city lies shrouded in secrets after the war, and a boy mourning the loss of his mother finds solace in his love for an extraordinary book called The Shadow of the Wind, by an author named Julian Carax.
