| The Botox Diaries: A Novel by Ballantine Books loved it! | | i thought botox diaries was funny at times you feel like you know lucy and jess. i am 25 and didnt relate to the charcters as being in there 40's i thought they were funny. it was a good read! | | The Botox Diaries: A Novel by Ballantine Books Don't waste your time... | | I have never offered one of these reader reviews but disliked this book so much (not hated--but strongly disliked) that I felt compelled to do so. It is so terribly predictable and flashy in all the wrong ways. Wow a single Mom with an adopted daughter who meets celebs/gets wooed by a very rich frenchman/is allowed to borrow a Chanel dress from the showroom in NY/gets bought Tiffany earrings on a whim/goes on a TV dating show and somehow never has her daughter around at just the right moments is almost insulting to read (read: so totally unbelievable)... this is chick lit at its worst. It seems contrived and very intentional in all the wrong ways. | | The Botox Diaries: A Novel by Ballantine Books average chick lit | | i would say this is an average chick lit book- not terrible, not great- some things made me chuckle (usually the heroine's sarcastic thoughts) but mostly i found it a bit slow and boring- didn't like the rich friend - like another reviewer said, it made no sense why our heroine is friends with her- didn't like any of the characters too much at all actually- i read faithfully until about 60% in and then couldn't stand it anymore and plowed through the rest skipping over all the boring details just to find out what happened to everyone- took about an hour or so- i think i may be tiring of chick lit now- but then again, i just started "momzillas" and it actually looks really promissing so far! clever writer she seems- but if i find it dull too, then i think i have indeed passed this chick lit phase- by the way, i am a bit surprised by what many people have said - that chick lit is mostly for the 20's group- i don't think so- i am nearing 40 and i like reading about people my own age- and i don't know why 20 yr olds would want to read about 40 yr olds- just my thoughts- anyhow, try the same 2 authors' other book: "Mine-Are-Spectacular-A Novel" - it is much better- or a really great one is "24 karat kids" by judy goldstein- loved that one- | | The Botox Diaries: A Novel by Ballantine Books Cute Read | | This book was a cute and easy read. It's not your typical chick lit as it focuses on fortysomethings but it's nice to read something other than "Oh my, so so wants me!". The characters, I think, are that real that you can kinda relate to them in a sense. Hope to see more books from these authors! | | The Botox Diaries: A Novel by Ballantine Books Light summer read. | | I read the review of this book before I purchased it and I was a little concerned if I was going to be depressed (as I just turned 40) or was it going to make me laugh. This book definitely made me laugh and it was nice to relate to some of the story. Most of these types books are geared to women in their 20's and 30's and are written that way. I enjoyed that the book had more characters my age. Hope there will be more of these books. | | The Botox Diaries: A Novel by Ballantine Books Product Description | In a world where plastic surgery is as popular as a pair of sexy Manolo Blahniks, suburban single mom Jessica Taylor is trying to make it past forty with nothing more than moisturizer and a swipe of mascara. Her glamorous best friend, TV producer Lucy Baldor, has a different idea of aging gracefully. “My body is a temple,” Lucy explains. “I just don’t want it to crumble like St. John the Divine.” Jess and Lucy’s friendship has weathered the trials of marriage, the births of children, and the transition from itty-bitty bikinis to “Kindest Cut” one-piece suits. Now the women are discovering that midlife crises aren’t just for men—they’re equal-opportunity dilemmas. To Jess’s dismay, Lucy announces that she’s taken a lover. A very famous lover. Her husband, Dan, is bound to find out (especially after a picture of the amorous duo appears on Page Six of the New York Post), but Lucy’s too wrapped up in the joys of expensive lingerie and romantic retreats to care. Jess finds herself in the midst of her own romantic predicament when, after ten years of silence, her sexy French ex-husband, Jacques, ends up back in her life—and in her bed.
Whether navigating bake sales, bicoastal affairs, or bagels-and-Botox parties, these wise and witty women know that their friendship will remain the one true thing they can count on. Well, that and a good push-up bra, of course. And their bond withstands everything—from an orgy in Willie Nelson’s trailer to a reality TV-show bachelor named Boulder. Funny, brazen, and often poignant, this irresistible novel offers an unexpected and entertaining look at two women’s midlife adventures. From Thai massage to tantric sex, who would have thought forty could be so much fun?

New Apple-related books
CARS: “While other book series by other ‘authors’ attempt to ‘inform’ you about ‘features’ and ‘ways’ you can use software or hardware ‘products,’ the Take Control of the Missing Manual for Dummies books will encourage you to let your id run amok through a vast technological landscape formed by people who actually do something for a living instead of living in their parents’ basement like you do.”

New Learn C on the Mac book
MacCentral: Mark’s ‘Learn C on the Mac’ updated for OS X: “SpiderWorks LLC on Wednesday announced the publication of an e-book version of Dave Mark’s seminal ‘Learn C on the Macintosh,’ now updated for Mac OS X.”
We at Ranchero learned C from an earlier version of Learn C on the Macintosh. (In fact, we have a small collection of well-thumbed Dave Mark books.)

Serialized eBooks via RSS
Russell Beattie: “Many of us are too busy to read classic books out there, instead choosing ‘page turners’ or books that are more applicable to our every day lives (like a some new marketing book). But we do have time to zip through our aggregator daily, right? So by taking a 500 page novel and distributing it, a few pages at a time, via RSS, we could read a new book in a month or so without even trying.”

‘Building Cocoa Applications’ book released
MacCentral reports on O’Reilly’s new book ‘Building Cocoa Applications’ by Michael Mahoney and Simson Garfinkel. I haven’t read the entire book yet, but so far it appears to be more comprehensive than Aaron Hillegass’s book (a book I like very much). How the two books compare otherwise I can’t say yet.

From Woeful to Wow! - 6 Steps to a Stunning Site
WebmasterBase: “Absolutely never let a user (or users) have the power to defame your site. Forms of this include guest books with undeletable entries, and other similar not-so-bright ideas. One of my favorites is the ‘Vote Me off the Net’ polls, where users may rate a site from, say, 1-5.”
