Tunnels (Book 1) by The Chicken House

Would have been much better if shorter

This wasn't a bad book, but the story wasn't compelling enough to justify the length. Edit it by half, and it would be a much better read.

You Have Got To Read This

" `You are hereby charged with unlawful entry and trespass into the Quarter under Statute Twelve, Subsection Two,' he said in a monotone." Will never thought that following his dad would end so badly for him.
Will and his best friend Chester find them-self's in a jail, 2000 miles under the ground, being tortured for information they don't know by the snyth, a ruthless police force that rule an under ground emptier. When all hope is lost, Will get the answer to his preys, but in a very unusual way.
Tunnels is exiting, adventurous, and over all a very good book about friends, enemies, and people you're not too sure about. Once I started I couldn't put it down. One of the best things about the book is its originality I don't think I've ever read anything like it. It really makes you think, could there be people liking under you? And if there is then how do they get light, food, and water? Roderick and Brian had some good ideas that deserve to de shared. One chapter just pulled me into the next. I'd recommend this book to any one with a heart for adventure.

a whole new world

Tired of magic and fairies. A new and highly creative world to spark your imagination. It isn't Tolkien but it is fun and I loved the original fantasy themes. Can't wait for Deeper.

Building the Story for the series

I enjoyed the book. Yes, it does take them awhile to get through to the Styx and to the community below, but....I think you have to build up all the characters for this story to grow on you. I had a difficult time at the beginning, but once I got through about 3 to 4 chapters, I was hooked. I loved the Characters, and I think this series has a lot of potential! I am also reading the Septimus Heap books

Enjoyable and Creative Fantasy

I found this book to be very enjoyable. I wouldn't say it was the best book I've ever read, but I did enjoy it. It has some good plot twists. It has a good ending point, as well as a good teaser for the next book. I'm very interested in seeing how it turns out. I hope one of the next books in the series goes a bit into the history of the colony and its inhabitants.

Product Description

14-year-old Will Burrows has little in common with his strange, dysfunctional family. In fact, the only bond he shares with his eccentric father is a passion for archaeological excavation. So when his dad mysteriously vanishes, Will is compelled to dig up the truth behind his disappearance. He unearths the unbelievable: a subterranean society that time forgot. "The Colony" has existed unchanged for a century, but it's no benign time capsule of a bygone era. Because the Colony is ruled by a merciless overclass, the Styx. Will must free his father--is he also about to ignite a revolution?
