| Crocodile on the Sandbank (Amelia Peabody, Book 1) by Mysterious Press Absolutely wonderful escape | | This turn-of-the-20th-century cozy set in Egypt is a wonderful beginning to an excellent series. I have read other books in this series, but had not read this one that got everything started. Amelia Peabody and friends make for a delightful read. Nothing to gory or sexy, but a great way to forget one's troubles for a while. In this beginning, we get a look at her meeting with Emerson and the beginnings of their banter that colors all these wonderful books. While the plotting is tight, it really is the dialog that keeps me coming back for more. | | Crocodile on the Sandbank (Amelia Peabody, Book 1) by Mysterious Press An iconoclastic (and entertaining) Victorian woman | I very much enjoyed this first adventure of Amelia Peabody's--and the first one I've read--with a few reservations: The identity of the villain cannot remain long a secret--there really are no other good candidates. The predictable plot is not particularly intricate, and where it is, it deliberately follows the line of Victorian melodrama.
Ms. Peters also seems to have unusual ideas about the succession to an earldom. Although it is true that some titles may pass through the female line, if it were true in Lord Ellesmere's case, perhaps Amelia's young friend Evelyn is the rightful successor herself, as the descendant of a son! Lord Ellesmere may choose to whom he leaves his money, but he may not choose to whom his title descend. It would also be very unusual if Ellesmere Castle were not entailed, and therefore the property of the new earl, not the person who inherited the earl's money.
In spite of all the above, I enjoyed the characters very much, and became attached to Amelia early on. (With a name like Amelia Peabody Emerson, how did she fail to be an American--perhaps from Concord MA?) If you want to spend time with an exuberant woman who enjoys breaking all the Victorian rules, and with an author who clearly has a well-developed sense of fun, the light-hearted Amelia Peabody books may be for you! | | Crocodile on the Sandbank (Amelia Peabody, Book 1) by Mysterious Press Not quite a mystery | | The first half of the book is a romance-like novel of the Victorian age, replete with lost loves, lost fortunes, lost virtue. Miss Peabdy is busy rescuing the delicate assistant, Evelyn. Then when she has all that taken care of off she is into what feels like a different book. The mystery comes blowing like hot sand with lovely Evelyn shimmering about between her two lovers (or three.) Then comes the end and you actually dont care. The end is not quite a bombshell, you can not say you did not suspect it. My verdict: not as good as I would have liked it to be. After reading the reviews, I ran out and bought three of her books. Now I am not if I will read the others. | | Crocodile on the Sandbank (Amelia Peabody, Book 1) by Mysterious Press Crocodile on the Sandbank | | Again, Elizabeth Peters has written a thriller. She makes the reader feel as if he is working right along side of the Emerson family in solving the mystery. There are always new twists and turns in her books which definitely hold your interest!! C. Pekkala | | Crocodile on the Sandbank (Amelia Peabody, Book 1) by Mysterious Press A Delightful Start | This is the first book in the delightful Amelia Peabody series, about the adventures of a Victorian/Edwardian lady archeologist and her family in Egypt. The series culminates with the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922.
This first book gives a taste of the comic parody of the entire series, and introduces what is to become a huge collection of family, friends and other characters. Having come into money and freedom, spinster Amelia Peabody travels to Egypt, with a stop in Rome where she picks up a traveling companion, a young English heiress down on her luck after being cast off by the Italian lover she had run away with. In Egypt they encounter the Emerson brothers, who are digging at Amarna, one time capital of the heretical pharaoh Akhenaton. Adventures ensue involving a mummy that wanders about at night.
This first outing is a bit rough. Abdullah, the head of the Emersons' diggers, seems less trustworthy than in later books. In those books, he often sighs wearily "Another year, another dead body". Not so in this book, it must be the only Peabody without a murder.
Nevertheless, this book is delightful, and sets the stage well for the series to come. One really has to wonder why no one has made an Amelia Peabody movie yet.
