The Definitive Book of Body Language by Bantam

Things you never knew about your body!

400 pages about the way your body communicates may seem a little overwhelming, but this book proves to be a really fun and simple read. The Definitive Book of Body Language covers way more than just what simple body language means, but where it comes from and how to read it. Reading this book made me more aware of those around me, and has helped me catch things about my own body language that I have not previously experienced. This book is ultra helpful in noting the cultural differences, as well as power and class differences, when it comes to body communication. This book would be very useful if you are going to travel abroad and want to give yourself some precautions, so as not to offend other cultures. There does not seem to be any real bias in the text, as it attempts to cover all angles as to why we communicate the way we do with our bodies. For instance, the authors discuss very interesting natural body reactions to certain emotions that have links to our own evolution. They also discuss things in our own environment that shape the way our body language evolves, such as television. Gender studies in the book are very strong, as it points out many of the strengths and weaknesses men and women have in reading and communicating body language. If you are interested in finding out what categories of communication you fall into (i.e. passive, dominant, flirtatious, etc.) this book is rather helpful in revealing those truths--you may not be aware! For the things you do that you are unaware of, this book can help teach you how to change your thoughts which adversely will change the way you present yourself. The book offers many answers to common questions: Can you teach yourself to lie and not be detected? What kind of handshake communicates what? Can you cross your arms and not come off as guarded? There are plenty of social scenarios that this book addresses, such as dating, business, law enforcement, friendships, etc. It was really intriguing how these different situations also fit within our personal space limitations. There are a vast number of examples and illustrations that help demonstrate the types of body language discussed; most interesting are those of celebrities and public figures. So whether you are interested in facial expressions, eye contact, legs, hands, or gestures this book covers it all, and does so in a humorous manner. The humor in combination with the imagery makes it very easy to remember the concepts addressed in the text. The only qualms I have about this book is the level of repetition of examples, however, this can serve as a good learning device and is hardly noticeable unless you are reading the book cover to cover. Overall, I highly recommend this book if you are interested in figuring out and perfecting others' perceptions of you or if you want to be able to decipher others' signals to give yourself power in interpersonal communication.

A book for salesmen, not scientists

I became interested in a body language book after hearing about it from my prof in grad school. The title of this book made me think that it was a "definitive" or "complete" book, but it was not.

What's good about this book is that it is written from the perspective of experienced salesmen. That is very good in itself (you're paying to learn from their expertise). They cover common body language signs and explain what they usually mean. They also give practical advise on learning/reading body language for many different kinds of settings (business, dating, etc). In other words, this book is very practical and easy to read. I did learn new things about body language by reading this book. However, it did not cover some things that are important from a more purely psychological or medical point of view (such as psychomotor agitation, etc).

What I hated about this book:
1) It is loaded with questionable scientific information. The experiments were not really experiments, and the authors use scientific names and information like pharm reps would. I noticed use of weasel words and lots of sketchy information to "sell" their ideas. That is what made me lower my rating the most. It cheapened the feel of the book and made the reading less enjoyable. (-2 stars)

2) It contains extraneous information, such as sections on why laughing is good for your health. I also got annoyed at how much of the beginning of the book was dedicated to scientific information when none of them are clearly qualified or well-informed on the subject.

3) It is ultimately NOT a book that's purely on body language. Read it and you'll see why. They should add a subtitle or change the title. (-1 star)

Interesting book.

Very good easy reading for this topic. Powerful insight when read with other "human behavior" books dealing with subjects such as neuro-linguistic programming and interviewing techniques.

Great book, easy read, very informative

I was fascinated by this book because it goes into detail about body language and how each body part tells the real message behind what we feel (eyes, hands, legs, etc). It was an easy read too, so I couldn't put the book down. I found myself highlighting areas of interest. Get this book!

More than I expected

When I read The Definitive Book of Body Language, I expected to read about crossed arms and legs, which way some one might be looking and so forth.
I didn't expect this to go into such depth. A very good read and very informative. The only thing that might improve this book is a chapter on how to defend yourself from used car salesmen and politicians, but that's being redundant.
