Fabulous First Novel

This is a great read. I was expecting a good story, but this one has some real meat on its bones! Wonderful characters, rich with history and familial angst, it is a refreshing fairy tale for modern times.

This book has a magic garden complete with a naughty apple tree, yet you will be able to suspend your disbelief because the author does a great job in weaving plenty of reality in amongst the magic.

By the end of this book, you will be seeking your own apple-tossing tree. Okay, maybe not, but you might be tempted to search out your very own Prince Charming, complete with purple sparks.

I can't wait for other books by Sarah Addison Allen.

Delightful!

This is an absolutely delightful, adorable book. I love reading about the South & its always quirky characters and this book has some of the best. I would love to know Evanelle and see what she would "just have" to give me. Also the women who just "know" how to please a man and the men who always married older women. But of all the wonderful characters none could compare to the apple tree. I wanted to be a part of this family and have lunch under the branches of the apple tree. I can still see the tree holding the family pictures and not letting them go. I can't wait to read her next book.

Fun, refreshing, and mystical

I really enjoyed this book on many levels. First, the apple tree that demanded a place in the family caught my attention, especially when the apples it tossed all over the place had to be buried in a hole so people wouldn't eat them. The characters were fun and original. The mystical parts were written in a believable way, like the family of women with a special talent in the bedroom, the family of men who married older women, and of course the Waverleys with their garden of flowers and herbs that had powers over the people that eat them. This book is romantic fun that I would highly recommend.

Product Description

In a garden surrounded by a tall fence, tucked away behind a small, quiet house in an even smaller town, is an apple tree that is rumored to bear a very special sort of fruit. In this luminous debut novel, Sarah Addison Allen tells the story of that enchanted tree, and the extraordinary people who tend it.…

The Waverleys have always been a curious family, endowed with peculiar gifts that make them outsiders even in their hometown of Bascom, North Carolina. Even their garden has a reputation, famous for its feisty apple tree that bears prophetic fruit, and its edible flowers, imbued with special powers. Generations of Waverleys tended this garden. Their history was in the soil. But so were their futures.

A successful caterer, Claire Waverley prepares dishes made with her mystical plants—from the nasturtiums that aid in keeping secrets and the pansies that make children thoughtful, to the snapdragons intended to discourage the attentions of her amorous neighbor. Meanwhile, her elderly cousin, Evanelle, is known for distributing unexpected gifts whose uses become uncannily clear. They are the last of the Waverleys—except for Claire’s rebellious sister, Sydney, who fled Bascom the moment she could, abandoning Claire, as their own mother had years before.

When Sydney suddenly returns home with a young daughter of her own, Claire’s quiet life is turned upside down—along with the protective boundary she has so carefully constructed around her heart. Together again in the house they grew up in, Sydney takes stock of all she left behind, as Claire struggles to heal the wounds of the past. And soon the sisters realize they must deal with their common legacy—if they are ever to feel at home in Bascom—or with each other.

Enchanting and heartfelt, this captivating novel is sure to cast a spell with a style all its own….
