| The Sugar Queen by Bantam A Delight to Read | | Reading Sarah Addison Allen's "The Sugar Queen", simply put, made me happy. The book was filled with witty dialogue that, at times, made me laugh out loud and characters who filled my imagination. It was well written with a clear, precise story that attached itself to the reader from the first page. Most of all, I enjoyed the subtle magical elements that almost seemed possible. If I could chose a special power, it would be that of the Chloe character for whom books she needed at certain times in her life would show up to give her guidance, whether she wanted them to or not. | | The Sugar Queen by Bantam Just a good, sweet book! | | I enjoyed Garden Spells and I also enjoyed this one just as much. It had a little bit of magic, a little bit of small-town life, characters you felt at home with, and a sort of folksy feel.
However, the writing...the writing drove me batty. Mixed tenses! Subjunctive? What's subjunctive? Sloppy syntax. Very high-school. It is distracting to read a sentence, and then have to read it again because its grammar makes the meaning unclear.
This is partly the writer and partly the editor. Details count. And in this case they count against.
