| Trinity: The Scientific Basis of Vitalism and Transcendentalism by iUniverse, Inc. Grasping at straws | | The book is an attempt to understand a large area from a narrow field of vision akin to a chemist evaluating a rare wine based on it's chemical composition without ever tasting it. To know is different than to know about. The difference between the great scholar Joseph Campbell and the great mystic Ramana Maharshi. | | Trinity: The Scientific Basis of Vitalism and Transcendentalism by iUniverse, Inc. In search of a new perspective on evolution | I found this a fun book, and a very audacious one, as it displays the author's considerable knowledge from philosophy to General Relativity and Eastern mysticism. A frequent contributor to this reviewer's blog on evolution, Darwiniana, Mr. Smith is also an acute critic of the reigning orthodoxy of Neo-Darwinism, and understands the need for a completely transformed paradigm. His ability as a trained scientist (in population genetics no less) to stand back from evolutionary dogmatism deserves support. Although our perspectives differ somewhat, witness some of our debates at the blog, as in a debate between the Kantians and Hegelians, I found the basic effort to storm the summit fascinating at each stage: the basic intuition is right, we have to find a synthesis of post-Newtonian sciences, relativity and the quantum, the complexities of consciousness as evidenced in the great sutras of antiquity, and the philosophies of history that stand as a challenge to the versions prouduced via Darwinian scientism. Smith with his hypotheses as to 'trinity' makes me think of the subject of classic Samkhya where the cascade of evolutionary triads speaks to an intuition about 'evolution' lost to modern science. The author seems to be trying to rediscover the non-dual aspects of a deeper reality behind the surface of evolution.
| | Trinity: The Scientific Basis of Vitalism and Transcendentalism by iUniverse, Inc. Product Description | | The time has come to embrace a new discipline called Trinity, a science that studies nature’s innate receptions. An organizing principle found in nature, Trinity heals our spiritual traditions, unifies Darwinism and intelligent design, and resolves quantum mechanics and general relativity. In this ground-breaking scientific guide, Stephen P. Smith explains that the science of Trinity is a metascience as it tends to demand broad knowledge. After describing his hypothesis, he reveals that in its most basic form, Trinity is a mediation that cannot be reduced or negated, but instead is a synthesis that combines and possibly destroys two opposing metaphysical forms. Each of the seven brief chapters in Trinity addresses an area of specialty for Smith, including special and general relativity, quantum mechanics, and finally, philosophy and mysticism. Smith urges scientists to address the emotional element of being to progress further and to study Trinity with new maturity. Smith’s first original work offers a new awareness of one’s place in nature and shows how Trinity can be found not only in one’s environment, but also in one’s words and broader interactions—and offers the belief each of us can be one with the universe. |
