| On Modern Origins: Essays in Early Modern Philosophy by Lexington Books Sans Pareil | For the sake of having a review of On Modern Origins that is actually worth reading, here is an excerpt from a review by Professor Richard Velkley...
"Superbly practicing the art of reading, Richard Kennington uncovers the founding arguments of the early modern philosophers. His explications of the thought of Bacon and Descartes on the relations between method, experiential starting-points, and the final purposes of inquiry, are sans pareil for depth and subtlety. Kennington's work builds on insights of Heidegger, Leo Strauss, and Jacob Klein concerning the origins and intent of the modern project of mastering nature, but his reflection on this theme is more thorough and in the end more satisfying than any previous account."
In my personal opinion, it is an excellent book as long as you understand before you begin that it is a collection of scholarly essays covering a diverse array of very difficult questions which assumes the reader is at least vaguely familiar with the texts being discussed. So if you have not yet read Descartes, Bacon, etc., this book is probably not for you. Unless, of course, you just want to look smart while tanning at the beach. | | On Modern Origins: Essays in Early Modern Philosophy by Lexington Books Please Mr. Kennington.... | | Mr. Kennington offers the reader a type of alternative viewpoint to Descarte, and his theories, many that seem to be found at Catholic universities. If one's interest is in obscure, obtuse viewpoints concerning famous texts (such as Descartes' Meditations and his interest with light)then this book is for you. I found many points that were spurious in my opinion, and I also found that Mr. Kennington relied on either unresearched or unaccepted interpretations a bit too much, but this was what made the book what it is. Nevertheless, be forwarned: this book is at best, convoluted, and at worst, completely incomprehensible. | | On Modern Origins: Essays in Early Modern Philosophy by Lexington Books Product Description | | Richard Kennington (1921-1999), a professor for many years at Pennsylvania State University and the Catholic University of America, was renowned for his insight in reading and teaching early modern philosophy. Although he published articles and spoke widely, never before have his writings been collected in a book. On Modern Origins deftly shows how modern thinkers assessed the errors of the classical tradition and established in its place a philosophy that fuses a new meaning of nature and of theory with humanitarian goals. This volume is an essential source for scholars seeking to understand the contemporary significance of the dawning of the modern era. |
