| Organic Church: Growing Faith Where Life Happens by Jossey-Bass Read the first half. |
I loved the first half of this book, even though my parish is running from a far more traditional model. I felt that the course this book suggested could be integrated into a more traditional church for a more balanced approach.
But the author just kept pushing the Organic idea so far that he stretched the metaphor. It got rather hard to deal with and distracting and I put the book down half way through. I'm glad for what I got out of it, but I just couldn't stomach the rest. |
| Organic Church: Growing Faith Where Life Happens by Jossey-Bass Beware!! |
Be very careful when you read this book. This is not taught in church, nor is it taught in Bible schools. It is not taught in Christian books nor is it taught any where in America. Nope, this is a revolutionary way of doing church, one that is Biblical and organic in nature. (Thus, the title). Niel Cole does an excellent job showing what the purpose of the Church truly is. He also clearly shows how the way we do church here in America is ineffective.
So beware, it will rock your world, if you let it. |

| Organic Church: Growing Faith Where Life Happens by Jossey-Bass Fun Book To Read |
| Neil Cole connects with the reader in this book. He takes the fear out of experiencing the 'organic' style church. It's a good book for anyone seeking information regarding the house church movement. |
| Organic Church: Growing Faith Where Life Happens by Jossey-Bass underwhelmed |
"Organic Church" has some helpful ideas on how to do church, but it is a church planting book. This was not very clear from the dust jacket. This will seriously limit its applicability to many in ministry. Not all of us have been called abandon everything else for a church planting strategy. It vastly under-delivered on its claim to 'ruin me for the ordinary church.'
Cole's writing is pretty good, but unfortunately, it suffers from the same distraction as many Christian books; it has way too many stories and illustrations. The concepts in this book could have been covered in 100 pages or less.
The general principle of taking faith to where people live is an idea worthy of a good book. I would like to know how that might work in various contexts. Perhaps he finally gets to that. I tired of the anecdotes and put it down after 60 pages. Some will find his approach of `just listening to the Spirit' for guidance refreshing. But playing the "God told me" card is not a convincing argument. I didn't find this book to be overly reflective. |
| Organic Church: Growing Faith Where Life Happens by Jossey-Bass Product Description |
| Churches have tried all kinds of ways to attract new and younger members - revised vision statements, hipper worship, contemporary music, livelier sermons, bigger and better auditoriums. But there are still so many people who aren't being reached, who don't want to come to church. And the truth is that attendance at church on Sundays does not necessarily transform lives; God's presence in our hearts is what changes us. Leaders and laypeople everywhere are realizing that they need new and more powerful ways to help them spread God's Word. According to international church starter and pastor Neil Cole, if we want to connect with young people and those who are not coming to church, we must go where people congregate. Cole shows readers how to plant the seeds of the Kingdom of God in the places where life happens and where culture is formed - restaurants, bars, coffeehouses, parks, locker rooms, and neighborhoods. Organic Church offers a hands-on guide for demystifying this new model of church and shows the practical aspects of implementing it. |
