A book I'll share with all my expectant friends

I ordered this book in hope that I'd found something I could actually recommend to expectant cousins and friends. And I wasn't disappointed. The Moms on Call Guide to Basic Baby Care, written by Laura Hunter and Jennifer Walker, is just 159 pages, written in an easy-to-read question-and-answer style. It's not the exhaustive book of baby questions that you find in What to Expect the First Year. It's the kind of book a busy mom can actually read. It answers your questions, giving basic medical care advice, and tells you when to call the doctor. Plus, it gives you guidelines for establishing bedtime routines that will help you and your baby sleep through the night. Unlike most parenting books, it takes into consideration the fact that there are other members in your family besides the baby (the authors each have a set of twin boys, in addition to other children). Plus, it comes with a DVD that shows you how to do everything from swaddle your baby to suction their nose.

Their 2007 book is up-to-date, with the "Back to Sleep" campaign and "tummy time." But it's also old-fashioned, with instructions for swaddling your baby--as well as natural, suggesting regular corn starch from the kitchen shelf for the baby's bottom instead of the expensive, perfumed stuff renamed "baby powder".

We don't use every one of their methods, but Moms on Call is a book we'll be recommending to all our friends. If they want more, I think BabyWise and the "BabyWise Bliss" DVD have a lot of good advice. And for extremely down-to-earth common-sense parenting, To Train Up a Child has a lot of good stuff. But when I hear a friend is expecting, I don't want to overwhelm her with philosophy and psychology. She'll get enough of that from the well-meaning strangers at the grocery store. I'll be sharing with her the common-sense basics that helped us make it through the first months: The Moms on Call Guide to Basic Baby Care.

Don't settle for this kind of parenting experience...it can be so much better than this!

Did you notice most of these raving reviews come from the authors' hometown? Their friends are very kind to all write in and support them, but what we need is objective information. As a mother of 9 children who is not personally connected with the authors, I have the experience and the objectivity to assure you...there IS a better way. My 9 wonderful, obedient, happy children are proof that you don't have to harden your heart and ignore your baby's very-real feelings to successfully raise children. (Your child is a human being and deserves to be treated with the same respect, tenderness, and dignity that you would want to be treated with.) God designed babies to continue with the closeness, the nurturing, and the intimacy that they have become accustomed to in the womb. This kind of natural parenting gives back much BETTER results than the same-old "teach them to give up on mom & cry themselves to sleep" method that's been repackaged and retitled 200 times! The cry-it-out method may work, but at what price? Your child's trust? Their sensitivity to others? Their peace and joy? Toss this book aside and find a book on natural parenting...or simply follow the pattern that's been set before you in pregnancy. The benefits are more wonderful than I can possibly describe! Why do you think we're on our 9th child?...because it's so easy, so fun, so fulfilling when you do it the way God designed...the natural way. Our babies sleep with us and I've never missed a good night's sleep yet! We are all well-rested--and guess what? No one had to suffer or be left lonely. Our babies don't just nurse for food every 2 hours (upon waking & going to sleep), they nurse for thirst and comfort, as needed. Therefore baby never has to fuss and is easily comforted. Nursing puts baby right to sleep...no struggles. Nursing was meant to be the Perfect Answer to every infant need, not just a form of calorie intake. Wow! How easy this makes parenting!! Mom nurses for shorter periods and doesn't feel bogged down...it becomes second-nature, casual, simple. Everything flows smoothly, naturally...this is too easy for words. And the bond you and your children will share is incredible! They deeply trust and respect you; they want to do everything to please you! It makes discipline a cinch when that time arrives! You don't need this book. It might leave you "glad" or "satisfied" because you don't know of anything better...but there truly is a better way that will leave you joyful, exhilarated, and longing for more! But be careful...it might leave you wanting a houseful of kiddos like us! :)

Best Thing That Ever Happened to New Parents

As a new parent, this book guides you through all of the things no one ever tells you about raising a new born. The swaddle technique works so good that our child has been sleeping through the night since he was 3 weeks old. The advice on colds and spit up were life savers (and saved a lot of money on doctor visits). I cannot thank the authors enough for putting this how to be a mom and dad manual together.

Pretty Good

I saw these two women speak and they were wonderful. However, I just thought the book was o.k.. Some useful tips but if you ever get a chance to see them in person take it.

Useful book

This book has a lot of info on basic care and some great tips for getting your baby to sleep longer through the night. We haven't tried those tips yet, but our friends had the authors visit, have applied the tips and have had GREAT success with getting their baby to sleep. I'd recommend the book and hope to get around to using it more fully--it does take some discipline and routine to apply the principles, but they're very good ideas.

Product Description

Laura Hunter and Jennifer Walker are on-call pediatric nurses and mothers. While answering parents' questions, they realized new parents lack the basic information needed to care for their infants. Moms and dads no longer have the advantage of grandma living next door to share her years of wisdom. They're on their own--and they need help. This simple guide addresses real-life, basic infant care needs for new moms and dads. Topics range from feedings and bedtime routines to common medical questions. The included instructional DVD gives parents visual step-by-step demonstrations of how to care for a newborn to six-month-old.
