A Love Story Documented in Letters and Photos

A Love Story Documented in Letters and Photos

This book, authored by the "Kahlo Guru" Salomon Grimberg, is not just another Kahlo biography nor is it just another book of Kahlo photos. This book tells of a love story between the photographer Nickolas Muray and the painter Frida Kahlo. Written in somewhat of a biographical format, it begins with Muray's life "before Kahlo" followed by Kahlo's life "before Muray"... and then they meet. When these two icons collide, the love story begins. This book captures the most intimate moments of that secret relationship as told through their love letters and the many photographs taken by Muray. 56 of those photos, some never before published, are shown in this book in full color and duotone plates.

This book begins with a one page acknowledgement written by Grimberg. In the back of the book there is a 3 page chronology of Nickolas. Following that is an index of 88 known photos of Frida taken by Muray, complete with a thumbnail photo and identifying information.

When you've read of all the mundane biographies and want to read something more personal about Frida, then this book is for you. Although it's a love story, it's just another tragic chapter in Kahlo's anything but ordinary life.

Excellent photos - poor text

Many wonderful photos of Frida Kahlo by Nicholas Murray, though they could have been reproduced on a better quality of paper. The text is poor - much of it appears to be mere speculation rather than historically supported fact. And even the speculation jumps events, leaving out intervening information. Numerous typos as well.

If you want the photos - 5 stars for the photos, but 4 for reproduction. If you want accurate biographical information - 2 stars.

best book yet on Frida

I purchased as a gift for an artist and follower of Frida Kahlo. It by far is the best book yet on Frida's life and art. This book depicts her concern for humanity, emotions, her inner beauty and life lessons. The recipient loved it!

Product Description

In the '30s and '40s, photographer Nickolas Muray was Frida Kahlo's friend, lover, and confidante. He continually photographed her over the course of their relationship, creating dozens of iconic portraits. Largely unpublished until now, the images reflect Muray's love of his subject. An early adopter of color photography, he could hardly have wished for a more vibrant and compelling model. Having made self-portrait the key topic of her existential paintings, Kahlo staged herself before Muray's camera with the same virtuosity she brought to bear on her own paintings in traditional costumes, heavy jewelry, and hairstyles replete with flowers and the portraits became a joint endeavor tantamount to a record of performance art. I Will Never Forget You tells the story of their relationship in image and word, drawing on the pair's poignant correspondence and artistic collaboration to paint a fresh portrait of a most beloved artist.

CARS: “While other book series by other ‘authors’ attempt to ‘inform’ you about ‘features’ and ‘ways’ you can use software or hardware ‘products,’ the Take Control of the Missing Manual for Dummies books will encourage you to let your id run amok through a vast technological landscape formed by people who actually do something for a living instead of living in their parents’ basement like you do.”

New Learn C on the Mac book
MacCentral: Mark’s ‘Learn C on the Mac’ updated for OS X: “SpiderWorks LLC on Wednesday announced the publication of an e-book version of Dave Mark’s seminal ‘Learn C on the Macintosh,’ now updated for Mac OS X.”

We at Ranchero learned C from an earlier version of Learn C on the Macintosh. (In fact, we have a small collection of well-thumbed Dave Mark books.)

Serialized eBooks via RSS
Russell Beattie: “Many of us are too busy to read classic books out there, instead choosing ‘page turners’ or books that are more applicable to our every day lives (like a some new marketing book). But we do have time to zip through our aggregator daily, right? So by taking a 500 page novel and distributing it, a few pages at a time, via RSS, we could read a new book in a month or so without even trying.”

‘Building Cocoa Applications’ book released
MacCentral reports on O’Reilly’s new book ‘Building Cocoa Applications’ by Michael Mahoney and Simson Garfinkel. I haven’t read the entire book yet, but so far it appears to be more comprehensive than Aaron Hillegass’s book (a book I like very much). How the two books compare otherwise I can’t say yet.
