Heavenly?

Alcorn uses extensive Scripture to "de-spiritualize" Heaven--Heaven is and will be a real and physical destination, ultimately on the New Earth after God is done with history as we know it.

Sometimes his writing is repetitive (this 450-page book could have been half that with better editing and outlining) and sometimes he engages in imaginative "it could be like this" thinking, but mostly he's right on target. One problem he points out clearly is that the prevalent view of Heaven as cloud-floating eternal weightlessness deprives most of us of the incentive to really look forward to Heaven in the life-changing way we should.

Don't read this book if...

Don't read this book if you have any fantasies about how good China is treating Christians (or any other religious groups for that matter.) This tale only gives us a glimpse of how Christians fare in this country. The story line opens our eyes to the facts in China and greater truths through Ben as a powerful business man finds there is more to life than making money.

Review of 'Heaven'

This was highly recommended to me by a friend, who was highly impressed.
It has viewpoints that she had never realized before and explained many of the mysteries that she had wondered about. Looking forward to reading it with great anticipation.

Worthwhile for non-believers

I am a non-believer, and a family member gave me this book to try to change my mind by whetting my appetite for heaven. It didn't do that, but it did provide insight to the way they and other fundamentalists think. It was also hilariously funny. For these two reasons I recommend this book to non-believers.

The humor in this book is not intentional, but it is better than most parodies. Using a little scripture, a fair amount of "scholarship" (363 footnotes!), and a lot of speculative reasoning, Alcorn answers the most obscure questions about heaven. For example, if there is no death in heaven, and the Bible promises a feast with meat, where will the meat come from? The most likely answer is that God will provide some kind of delicious meat substitute. If the New Jerusalem is some 1500 miles in the sky, how will we breathe? Etc., etc. Mind you, his delivery is much better than mine, and the pages of convoluted logic preceding each conclusion just amplify the inanity.

What I learned from this book about fundamentalists is that they are beyond hope. If they believe this stuff, and the many positive reviews here attest to the fact that they do, then they are simply not worth reasoning with. Better to just avoid them, ridicule them and try to keep them out of positions of power.

Heaven - The Real Place

This book is a major work and will be remembered as such. Randy Alcorn has given us what is often misunderstood. A must read for all people. The reality of Heaven is clearly revealed. Once again I say a must read.
