| I sppreciated the edition of Merriam's I had in high school, which was worn with use, but as a 28 year-old law student I find the selection of words narrow and depressing. There's what I consider to be an irritating amount of slang in the volume and the defintions are alternately too brief or vague to suit my tastes. I think it's probably more suitable for teens, or undergrads (?). For older adults I'd suggest it as a secondary reference - for those who write on a regular basis Oxford's is still the best. |

| The tenth edition is, considering its size and price, very comprehensive. While it doesn't have every word known to mankind, I keep one on me at all times (in the backpack, next to my bed) and use it frequently. So far I haven't really been outright dissapointed, its done much more good than bad as far as clearing up definitions of new and confusing words. Its nice if you need to be moving around frequently as its not cumbersome at all. |
