The future....and what is to come. | | Mark Steyn is an excellent writer and this book is no exception. I received this book as a gift while I was deployed with the military the first time around to Iraq....Mark makes some excellent points about the future of the world and how current events are having a large impact on how the world views us and will view us in the future. Be very aware of the world around you....start with this book and it will lead you in the right direction. Mark is a brilliant writer with a very easy to read style. I recommend that you pick up all of his books....as this is just a taste of what an excellent writer he is. And I agree with Mark, Europe has sat back and allowed their country to be overtaken by religious zealots and didn't fight back all in the name of "expression of freedoms", the Dutch have learned a difficult lesson from this, the British are learning their lesson and the Norwegians just don't want to admit their troubles. The trouble isn't with Islam however...the trouble is with RADICAL, MILITANT Islam...there is a difference and we must stand up and face that today...or we will see ourselves in the same boat at the European nations are today. The riots may be in France today but they could be in California or Michigan just as easily tomorrow. Although this is a serious issue and Mark writes with this in mind...he can be a quite humorous read at the same time. In America Alone, he has given us a "no holds barred" modern history of the dangers of multi-culturalism, imbalance of demographics, and liberalism carried to the extreme, and he does it with simple English at laugh out-loud, jet speed delivery. A must read for every American. Buy it today, read it today, and tell others to do the same. Urgent message to the free world | America Alone centralizes on the demographic trends of the world today: the West is basically not having children anymore, and in fact the birthrate of most Western countries (Europe and Canada) is well below the replacement rate. (The United States is the exception to that rule and is populating at just over the replacement rate.) On the other hand, Islamic countries and Muslims in general are the exact opposite in that they are having tons of kids, 4 or 5 times the West.
At the same time, Muslims are now (and have been) emigrating from the Middle East into the rest of the world, especially Europe. The goal of Islam is to take over the world and institute sharia law. Islamists are choosing to use terrorism (i.e.- murder) to scare the evil infidels and force them to submit. This strategy is working in Europe, where the nanny state is such where the government gives in, in the name of "multiculturalism" and "sensitivity" every time Allah's servants riot and murder random people on their way to work just for being their evil infidel selves. Unfortunately for the West, instituting Islamic holidays in Germany or removing the cross from the English flag doesn't end this barbarism, because that's not what the jihadists are after. They want all infidels dead or under the authority of a worldwide Islamic regime, and these concessions that governments make are actually signs of weakness, not friendliness.
To quote America Alone, "As Hussein Massawi, former leader of Hezbollah, neatly put it, 'We are not fighting so that you will offer us something. We are fighting to eliminate you.' " -Pg 151
Throughout the book, Steyn gives many examples of recent terrorist/murderous acts committed by jihadists, and it really creates a sober mood in the reader. He references the beheading of Daniel Pearl and others, how the last thing Pearl heard in his life was the sound of "Allahu Akbar". This isn't just political; this is life and death.
Mark Steyn gives 10 conditions that the free world can create that "increase the likelihood of Muslim reform, or at any rate do not actively impede it." They include ending the Iranian regime, countering Islam on the ideological front, striking militarily when the opportunity presents itself, and supporting economic and political liberty in the Muslim world. (Pg 205-6)
After I got into the book, I was hoping and waiting the whole time for the author to give solutions to this situation. I was really glad when his proposed solutions were finally listed, but I wish that Steyn would have elaborated on them more. I also would have liked to see more information on Islam itself and sharia law.
Nevertheless, this is an excellent book, and I believe that every literate person in the free world should read it. We have really got to open our eyes to what is going on, and we have to do something about it. If we don't, we and our way of life itself could disappear to the sounds of "Allahu Akbar". | | America Alone: The End of the World as We Know It by Regnery Publishing, Inc. the 2008 edition | In a new introduction to the paperback edition Steyn says that the trends he described are continuing unabated. Some signs that we are actually headed for a "post-western post-civilization": In 2007, the city of Brussels had a mayor whose Party caucus of 18 members had 10 who are Islamists. Soon, according to a liberal newspaper, the majority of the Russian Army will be Islamists. Gay-bashing is on the rise in the most "tolerant" cities in Europe. (Amsterdam appointed a commission to try to figure out why that was!) Canada's Islamic population has doubled in the last 10 years. Thousands of polygamous men in Britain and Canada receive welfare payments for each of their wives. British Islamic nurses in public hospitals refuse to wash their hands because they would have to bare their arms, which is unIslamic. The rise in the number of "honor killings." "Reverse assimilation": the host communities are having to assimilate to the immigrants, not vice versa. In Oxford, the Islamists announced plans to broadcast the call to pray three times a day over the most serene of English towns.
Steyn also reviews the reviews. The book is represented, even by favorable reviews, as claiming that the problem is birthrates. In fact, the problem depends also on the rate of conversion, the rate of immigration, the rate of emigration, as well as the rate of births. (p. xi)
Other reviews condemned his forecasts to the tune of "it's absurd to suggest that the Islamification of Europe will happen" soon when it can't possibly happen before 20xx ! "It's a curious line of reasoning: yes, we're heading for the falls but not as fast as Steyn says." (p. x)
Books these days are defeated with single words. The favorite word, of course, is "racist". Steyn counters by pointing out that in the Balkans, the Islamists are of exactly the same race as the non-Islamists. Race is not the problem, and charges of racism are a diversionary tactic. Moreover, in 2007, some wannabe suicide bombers were arrested. They were ethnic German converts, not Arabs. "Islam is an ideology", not a race. (p. xxi)
Another single word used to defeat this book is the word "alarmist." Steyn counters with, If the information in this book is not enough to alarm you, what would it take?! The book is not about "them;" it's about "us". The most terrifying fact is the indifference of the European (and American) people to what is happening. "More to the point, who are you relying on to `hold the line'? ... The Western world is not run by fellows noted for their line-holding." (p. xv) In 2007, the Nordic Battlegroup's coat of arms, which showed a lion, was changed to remove the penis from the lion. Steyn calls this "The Gelded Age".
Finally, there is the current effort by Islamists to get this book banned in Canada. "The price of liberty is eternal vigilance. Which is why so many radical Muslim lobby groups are eager to criminalize vigilance." (p. xxv)
To find out the current status of these conditions in the United States and, more important, to find out WHY such "auto-genocide" is happening, read While America Sleeps: How Islam, Immigration and Indoctrination Are Destroying America From Within, written by a non-Leftwing, non-Rightwing intellectual.
