| | How to Conquer Negative Emotions by Foundation of Human Understanding The real thing | The book is marvelous along with the observation exercise referenced inside. This excersise serves to seperate the observer from their thoughts and emotions, which when overcome allows the authentic self to emerge over time.
Along the way comes a realization that our perceived goodness and intent are false and we are helpless to solve this dilemma and an eventual letting go to a higher power.
It is a painful journey at first which becomes simpler over time. I believe it be the meditation referenced in the Bible and practiced by Chistain mystics at the time of Christ.
The exercise is not for everyone simply because many people believe they can attain their own goals and dreams, are unwilling to trust anthing beyond their own efforts, or wish to continue blaming others for their unhappiness.
Only conscientious seekers will recognize the relevance of this material - others will feel disdain toward it. | | How to Conquer Negative Emotions by Foundation of Human Understanding Roy knows what he's talking about | | Roy's right. He's hard to hear at first. Especially if the reader is bent on keeping their bad habits and blaming others for them. It's challenging to realize the problem is with ourselves first and foremost. How we react to others and our circumstances is the key to turning around our lifes. Roy's not a guru, he's not a genie, he's a very gifted counselor who's seen it and heard it all. He's helped thousands of people with a concept that is deceptively simple. Yet how many people can do it? The answer is most people are angry when they aren't given a magic pill to swallow to solve their problems. Roy's technique requires patience and honest self-appraisal. It really works. It may not work in an hour or a day. But it works and it gets deeper and more profound and meaningful the more one practices it. To be threatened by Roy is to be threatened by the truth. What are the negative reviewers afraid of? | | How to Conquer Negative Emotions by Foundation of Human Understanding This book will peel paint | | Like some of the other reviewers I was skeptical of the author of this book, as I first heard him on the radio and his message seemed too simple. (I'm an engineer) Having read the book and followed the instructions I can say that it is not rubbish. I was not "searching for meaning" when I ran across Mr. Masters on the radio, quite by chance. In fact, I ordered his book for a badly drug addicted friend. I decided to browse it first and found it absolutely fascinating. I found myself in the book, as well as everyone I have ever known, including my druggie friend. Of course he has refused to read the book, but then that is predicted in it. I have taken some comfort in now having a better understanding of his addiction. I can certainly see that if he would read the book he would be helped. This book should be helpful to anyone with almost any kind of "problem" because if the theories and practice therein are valid, and I think they are, then there are but a few, maybe only one, root cause of all problems. The book can be a little difficult to read - I'd say it is written at "college" level. I don't mean to sound like a salesman, but interested parties should also order Mr. Masters meditation tape or cd and/or listen to his radio show (go to www.fhu.com for station info or listen there). After hearing Mr. Master's verbal explanations the book is much easier to understand. The reviewer who described this book as Frueian psychobabble and Bible thumping is in my onpinion, way off the mark. There are some Freudian sounding bits and some references to the soul - but there would have to be in a book of this nature. What I found so fascinating was that Mr. Masters can so artfully combine secular psychotherapy with spiritualism - two things that normally don't mix. It can be interesting to give this book to people you know. One friend told me part way through the second chapter he threw it down and it ruined his entire day. (I think he found himself in the book and didn't like what he found). He didn't return the book to me. Maybe he's reading on. I love this book. It is written at an almost poetic level. Writers take note of his style. I now use the theories in this book to gain a better understanding of literature. Finally Shakespeare makes some sense to me. I have been noticing that when a book or movie does not follow the psychological principals in this book it will be a little flat, but when it does, the movie or book is more satisfying. I have found this to hold true with those who know nothing of these theories. One warning: Don't set this book down on a valuable piece of furniture, as it will peel the paint or varnish right off. -RH | | How to Conquer Negative Emotions by Foundation of Human Understanding Deep and rewarding | I read in one review that `Persons incapable of critical thought or reasoned behaviour may find this book deeply comforting'. I wonder if that person has read the book, because it certainly is NOT one of those superficial, comfort offerings that sell so well. This is one of the deepest forays into the human psyche, it show very accurately how our emotional reactions to life set us up for the situation we find ourselves in today, it shows how our emotional reactions set us up to produce a conditioned response to certain situations we encounter in life, and how even certain details can trigger responses beyond our control. To name an example, suppose as a child you have been humiliated by a teacher in front of the whole class, and this teacher smelled of cigars. Suppose that your emotional response to this situation transforms it into a traumatic experience. You may discover later in life that whenever you meet a man who smells of cigars produces negative emotions, anger in you, yet you cannot see how this irrational anger is related to the original incidence of the humiliation by this teacher. Likewise, our entire lives can be shaped around emotional triggers like that, causing us to be like biological robots instead of the human beings we were supposed to be. Entire lives can be wasted UNLESS we find the key to overcoming our conditioned responses. This is the positive message of the book, there IS a way of overcoming our conditioned responses, there IS a way of returning to who we were meant to be. The book comes up with many examples of what I just stated, and also points towards the solution. It is very profound, and you may find it therefore hard to read. As with all books written by Roy Masters, I find it best not to read it all at once, but read something, think about it, and then take up the book again to read some more. It is a deep, profound book, and it is very rewarding to have read it, it brings you face to face with yourself. Maybe that is why Masters produces such negative reactions in some people, maybe they do not like what they see when they look into the mirror of their souls. Well, hiding your head in the sand and cursing the one holding the mirror is not going to help you. I loved reading it, and I certainly can recommend it to you. 5-stars well deserved. | | How to Conquer Negative Emotions by Foundation of Human Understanding Book Description | | What is the real cause of unhappiness, and what is the cure? Few people have the courage or insight to see the truth behind our suffering: chronic negative emotions. Too often, we wake up one day and realize unhappily that we dont know who we are. We realize that life is slowly wearing us down, one step at a time, and painfully face the fact that we simply dont know how we lost ourselves, or more importantly, how we can find ourselves once again. The cause for this, as Masters explains, is simple: fear, guilt, anxiety, despair, tension, confusion, and other emotional reactions exert a powerful and cumulative hypnotic spell. In this spell, we lose our true selves in a maze of hazy, unseen forces - often never to be found again. We painfully realize that we are simply unhappy - and have no idea why, how we lost our peace of mind, or what we can do to become happy again. Roy Masters knows - the cause . . . and the cure. The remedy to unhappiness, once understood, is simple but profound: know your real self - and Roy shows you how. In this powerfully effective and practical book, he explains the simple remedy which strikes the cause of unhappiness at the root. This book can save lives, and can save you from spending thousands on drugs or years in therapy. The principles in this book, uniquely suited for modern times - yet rooted in the wisdom of the ages - have dramatically transformed the lives of hundreds of thousands already. |
