Ahhhh memories!

I bought this book as a gift for my boyfriend who was a student at Interlochen. He said it was a book that brought back memories including details he had forgotten. He said the book was well written and flowing. It would be a good entertaining gift for anyone who has ever attended Interlochen or anyone who has "summer at band camp" stories.

Pine Nuts left me smiling

Pine Nuts is a gem...a gentle, lively, poignant, frank, laugh-out-loudable recount of a place that had to be the camp of all summer camps. Makes me wish I'd learned an instrument or pursued theater as a kid, just for the chance to have gone to Interlochen (even if everyone did wear wide-wale corduroy knickers). Grab your favorite beverage and curl up with Feild on a wacky warp through time and back. This insider's look at the cast and culture of Interlochen left me smiling and eager for more.

Magic in Real Life

To those who say we are what we eat (or read or wear or do) Thom Feild counters 'No, we are where we went to camp!' His sly, sweetly captivating portrait of the high-spirited and yet surprisingly disciplined world of the Interlochen Arts Camp is a treat in and of itself; it also reveals how intense, passionate summers with thousands of other precocious young artists forges the adult who will 'create magic in real life.'

Great!

I never went to Interlochen, but I really enjoyed this book. Thom Field's writing is a breath of fresh air. Hope to see more from him soon!

lights... campers... Magic!

I have one regret about having read Thom Feild's PINE NUTS--that it was not available seven years ago. If I knew about Interlochen Arts Camp then what I know now, my very creative, original, marching-to-her-own-drum daughter would have been there!

Thom Feild beautifully writes, illustrates, and maps this warm, witty, insightful account of the world famous art camp from his experiences as student camper and instructor. PINE NUTS is a story about youth, creativity, adventure, discipline, and the tremendously rich possibilities for development when all that energy is brought together in one nurturing, supportive, stimulating, validating community of young artists testing their mettle and finding their truth and their creative voice.

For nearly 80 years, Interlochen Arts Camp has continually provided a magical space for young artists from all over the world to give themselves over to an intensive exploration of the arts in the summer quiet of the Michigan woods. The camp has been staffed and visited by many notable established artists over the years. Many of the alums have gone on to make significant contributions in music, theater, dance, writing, and the visual arts. All have carried into their lives the richness of the experience, whatever they ended up doing, and have kept that special energy flowing through friendships formed and partnerships forged.

Even though I am not an alum of Interlochen, I am so pleased to have tasted that special joy, love, and enthusiasm through reading PINE NUTS. The stories reminded me of my own first experience running props in high school a production of "Auntie Mame" and suddenly being promoted to head prop mistress when the original H.P.M. was called away to tend to her subjects as Homecoming Queen. (Great show! Prop room packed ceiling-to-floor full all kinds of props. 23 scene changes--13 in black-out.)

PINE NUTS was for me a real tonic, and I thank the author for sharing his experiences and observations as a developing artist and spreading some of that Interlochen magic and enthusiasm my way. [...]
