Stick to your guns (well maybe not guns)....

This is an interesting and timely book but is somewhat conflicted in it's scope - it attempts to put forward the case for a more progressive society and the actions we should take to reach this goal. However, it doesn't really get there on either count.

The advice for assertively putting forward a progressive agenda appears sound but lacks originality. Presumably anyone who picks up this book will already have a progressive outlook - making this aspect of the book somwhat mute.

The 30 Word Review

The author has done extensive research.
There is much to consider in what he says.
Life is too short for government conspiracy theories.
Progression is good. Standing still is bad.

Get up stand up, don't give up the fight,

This lengthy tome is a fascinating look into the machinations of a political party and associated campaigning organisation viz. the Democratic Party of the United States.

It is a very engrossing but complex manual for the return of a Democratic President and insofar as I can tell as an outsider of the American political system it looks remarkably like the playbook for a Barack Obama presidential campaign.

Written by a seasoned campaigner this heavyweight shows how "liberal" campaigners have learnt from the Republicans over the past years, learned, absorbed and modified the strategies that were used and updated them for the modern world. What you see each night can almost be predicted if you study the book carefully.

This is not merely a strategic vision, it is no mean manual. It is a vision which sets out goals to achieve, the action steps to take and uses the wide ranging skills of a prominent analsyt or several of the same to identify potential obstacles and the tactics needed to overcome them.

It is a total, all encompassing book and it's value will be determined by it's success or otherwise. For politico's and students, the interested voter, and probably most Republicans, this is an essential book to read and digest and perhaps, study. From it's pages I have learned a lot more of the American political system than I was previously aware of from my studies of the general textbooks. While not necessarily agreeing with the principles and policies enunciated therein I heartily commend this book without any further reservation.

Liberals!!!

Every progressive should read this. "Stand Up Straight" is compelling to say the least, although it does contain enough statistical data to drive you nuts. In the end, that may be the point. It delves into the many atrocities we've seen over the past 8 years of this current administration and digs deeper for ideas on how to take back control of our lives and our country. The only drawback is that much of the content in this book is either a) restating what most progressives already know or b) just common sense. At 600+ pages, it can get a little old reading things you already know. But overall, this title brings enough to the table to be a worthwhile read.

Good Information_but not enough originality

Bob Creamer has spent his life organizing for progressive causes. Like many, he never had the time to sit down and organize his thoughts and experiences into a comprehensive guide. Then, the feds gave him that opportunity--via a conviction for check kiting. Unfortunately, prison really may not be the best place for setting out a coherent account of how progressives can organize to win.

Rob's book is filled with useful information. It covers in exquisite detail everything from setting out his version of a progressive agenda to how to organize a precinct operation for your local aldermanic election.

One part Alinsky, one part "What is Wring With Kansas", and one part feel good boosterism for progressives, what results is a disorganized encyclopedia--not well suited for a reference book, and not amenable to straight through reading for any but the most committed activists (who would, however, already know most of what is in here).

For those just getting started in organizing their local communities and/or wanting to "do something" but unsure what to do, it will certainly provide useful tips for anyone willing to slog through all 600+ pages. Otherwise, it is unclear who he expects will complete this amalgam of everything Bob has learned during his life so far.

Good idea, not well executed.

Product Description

To turn this historic opportunity into long-term political realignment, Progressives must forcefully reassert our commitment to fundamental progressive values and to our vision for the future. Some people think that in order to win, Democrats need to move to the political center by adopting conservative values and splitting the difference between progressive and conservatives positions. History shows they are wrong. To win the next election and to win in the long term, we need to redefine the political center. In this book one of America s most experienced political strategists and organizers lays out a broad strategy for progressive victory and describes the tactics needed to win real-world political battles one at a time. The book analyzes: The self-interests of voters; Our targets for political communication; The principles of political messaging; The secrets of winning electoral and issue campaigns; What we mean by progressive values; How to describe a compelling progressive vision for the future.
