Robinson's Best Novel Yet!

I've read every one of Jeremy' Robinson's novels and have enjoyed all of them immensely. However, this one is special. The concept is wild, the pace is electric and the plot sizzles with excitement.

A definite must-read!

Antarktos medios

"Antarktos Rising" starts off with a spontaneous "crustal displacement" that causes the entire surface of the world to rotate around the core, placing the new North Pole someplace in North Dakota. This effectively shifts all the continents northwards by several thousand miles, completely changing the local climates and causing both polar ice caps to melt, creating tsunamis and flooding virtually all costal regions and islands. The water in the areas near the new poles refreezes to cause new polar ice caps to form over Canada and most of the US and Europe (and I suppose, the middle of the Pacific but this is never mentioned). The former poles become tropical. This turns Antarctica (which unlike the former North Pole, is actually a continent) into a vast new and uninhabited land that all the remaining nations on the world agree to split into thirds, according to which three countries are the first to get teams into a designated spot in the center of Antarctica. Only problem is, many countries are vying for their share of this huge chunk of tropical real estate, but it is already inhabited by killer dinosaurs and worse, ancient biblical enemies of mankind.

I am, in general, a fan of this sort of post-apocalyptic fiction that that weaves ancient myths (of which the bible is perhaps the richest and most interesting) into modern SF. And so I kind of liked this book, hence the 2.5 stars. But at the same time I think there are several problems and huge plot holes.

The world (as we know it - at least in the northern hemisphere) ends and all the remaining nations agree to divvy up Antartica among the three winners of a race? Come on! There is a crustal displacement (OK - unusual but semi-plausible scenario) but many thousands of miles of shift occur and there is little or no damage to surface structures??!! And the quadrillions of cubic meters of water covering the newly Arctic and Antarctic poles freeze so quickly that overnight there is glaciation??!! A mass of water that large simply can't freeze that fast at the delta T available - it would take weeks or months (perhaps years) at a minimum. There is more but I don't want to add any unnecessary spoilers.

Bottom line: loved the concept, did not love the execution. Poor science, lack of verisimilitude, and incredibly inept lack of character development. None of which will most likely stop me from throwing a few bucks after the sequel which is as clearly implied as it would be if it were advertised by title and publication date. After all, I said I'm a sucker for this sort of thing. 2.5 stars

Intelligent design

This novel ignores basic, proven, real-world physics on our planet in its opening premise.
What is far worse to my sensibilities is that this book promotes intelligent design and attempts to make believable the author's vision of Biblical doctrine.
Buy this book at your own risk of frustration with the author's view. I hated it. I burned it. I would not take the chance that some weak-minded fool would pick it up and believe it!

An Intense Philosophical Thriller

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R38GPFDMEL9DRR Antarktos Rising is a thrilling ride into a brave new world. The book starts out with the global catastrophe of massive floods and deadly temperature shifts. After the devastating crustal displacement has stabilized, much of the world is left uninhabitable. So, countries from all over the world race to claim the newly-transformed tropic of Antarctica. This situation allows for the interesting interactions of the elite from different countries. This is a topic that can be a hotbed for political arguments and racial discussions. However, regardless of one's personal politics, the strengths of each country's philosophy are pointed out over the course of the race.

There is a prehistoric element in the mix along with some mythology, which is taken from numerous cultures. And, all of this is on top of an unprecedented race between the world's most dangerous military units, each set on arriving first and attacking the other teams along the way.

Mira and Merrill provide two very interesting characters, and their relationship does throw the reader a pleasantly unexpected curve ball.

In short, I'd say Antarktos Rising is an intense philosophical thriller that I'd recommend to fans of Michael Crichton, James Rollins, and Steve Alten.

just a bad book

I bought this book because of the high overall rating - and was very disappointed. The story did not seem original to me (an odd combination of Jurassic Park and The Day After Tomorrow), with parts of the bible Genesis story thrown in. The writing style is poor, even by the standards for this type of novel. The characters are paper thin and far too stereotypical to be interesting. I wish I hadn't wasted my time.

Product Description

A phenomenon known as crustal displacement shifts the Earth's crust, repositioning continents and causing countless deaths. In the wake of the global catastrophe, the world struggles to take care of its displaced billions. But Antarctica, freshly thawed and blooming, has emerged as a new hope. Rather than wage a world war no nation can endure, the leading nations devise a competition, a race to the center of Antarctica, with the three victors dividing the continent. It is within this race that Mirabelle Whitney, one of the few surviving experts on the continent, grouped with an American special forces unit, finds herself. But the dangers awaiting the team are far worse than feared; beyond the sour history of a torn family, beyond the nefarious intentions of their human enemies, beyond the ancient creatures reborn through anhydrobiosis-there are the Nephilim. The world races to claim a new continent, only to find it already taken.

MacCentral: Mark’s ‘Learn C on the Mac’ updated for OS X: “SpiderWorks LLC on Wednesday announced the publication of an e-book version of Dave Mark’s seminal ‘Learn C on the Macintosh,’ now updated for Mac OS X.”

We at Ranchero learned C from an earlier version of Learn C on the Macintosh. (In fact, we have a small collection of well-thumbed Dave Mark books.)

Serialized eBooks via RSS
Russell Beattie: “Many of us are too busy to read classic books out there, instead choosing ‘page turners’ or books that are more applicable to our every day lives (like a some new marketing book). But we do have time to zip through our aggregator daily, right? So by taking a 500 page novel and distributing it, a few pages at a time, via RSS, we could read a new book in a month or so without even trying.”

‘Building Cocoa Applications’ book released
MacCentral reports on O’Reilly’s new book ‘Building Cocoa Applications’ by Michael Mahoney and Simson Garfinkel. I haven’t read the entire book yet, but so far it appears to be more comprehensive than Aaron Hillegass’s book (a book I like very much). How the two books compare otherwise I can’t say yet.
