Fabulous book!

I highly recommend this book for all library school students, and for practicing librarians too. The book mentions many of the resources available, and tells you how to use them too.

Reference and Information Services in the 21st Century

This is an instructional book for future reference librarians to learn how to better serve their patrons. It is quite interesting but can be dry in parts. I am using it for a class and have learned much.

Book Description

Reference and Information Services in the 21st Century supercedes previous reference texts with an all new approach to reference service and coverage of essential topics for today’s professional. This unique introduction is the only reference textbook to specify the top resources in major subject areas and genres and show students how to approach the reference transaction by matching specific types of questions to the best available resources regardless of format. Part One covers the essentials—interviewing patrons, determining the information need, and developing a basic search strategy. The straightforward and practical Part Two helps professionals master the materials—print and electronic—most frequently used to answer questions about Government information; Bibliographic resources; Encyclopedias; Ready reference sources; Dictionaries; Indexes; and more.

Part Three considers special topics in reference—when and how to use the Internet as a reference tool, user instruction, and chapters on reader’s advisory work and service to children and youth authored by acclaimed expert Mary K. Chelton. Part Four addresses selection and evaluation of material, management of the reference department, assessment, and future trends. This innovative text was reviewed and guided by educators and practitioners at Rutgers University, Queens College, the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, the University of Arizona, San Jose State University, and the University of South Carolina . Striking an ideal balance between the practical elements and guiding principles of the profession, Reference and Information Services in the 21st Century will appeal to LIS educators, students, and both novice and experienced professionals
