| The Secret Teachings of All Ages (Reader's Edition) by Tarcher Most interesing history book you will ever read | | This is a complete compendium on the history of occult and esoteric knowledge written by a notable expert in the field. Hall leaves no stone unturned as you delve deep into the mysteries and belief systems of various ancient cultures. I had to read the chapter on Hermes twice in an attempt to fully grasp the depth of what I was reading. No agenda or proselytizing here, just an exciting and enlightening history lesson that you won't get in college. | | The Secret Teachings of All Ages (Reader's Edition) by Tarcher Comprehensive And Informative | This gigantic book is very informative. It touches on the origins of many philosophical subjects.
The word 'secret' in the title is significant. The main theme I think is that going back to the beginning of the human race there have been advanced souls who are initiated into ancient mysteries. After being sworn to secrecy they are sent out with that arcane knowledge to serve and enlighten mankind. Often they are misunderstood and persecuted.
For example Pythagorus and later Plato were supposedly initiated into the Egyptian mysteries during rites that were (and perhaps still are) performed in a secret complex underneath the Great Pyramid. The Edgar Cayce material indicates that Christ was also initiated into the Egyptian mysteries and it was Christ who broke the sarcophogus inside the pyramid to symbolize His victory over death.
There's a lot of very mysterious and mystical information in this book. It suggests that people like the enigmatic Francis Bacon had strange powers and possibly lived for over 300 years, faking his own funeral in the process.
Interesting for me was the idea that it was sorcery and the perversion of the mysteries that led to the destruction of Atlantis and ancient Egypt.
I took off one star because I feel it is perhaps too philosophical. Hall saw philosophy and symbolism in everything, suggesting that the stories in the New Testament in the bible are allegories for philosophical ideas. If amazon had a 10 star rating I would have given it 9 stars.
Hall believed that philosophy is the only hope for this profane and God forsaken world. The highlight of his short career on Wall Street was witnessing someone take their own life after losing money in the stock market. He had become disillusioned by World War 1 and the materialism that he perceived in the world.
This is not a book for skeptics or atheists. Hall believed that the spiritual realm is the true reality.
The text size that accompanies the illustrations is smaller than the other text. You have to read those descriptions in good lighting. The illustrations are good though and very informative.

| | The Secret Teachings of All Ages (Reader's Edition) by Tarcher COMPREHENSIVE, WELL WRITTEN AND ACCESSIBLE | Manly Palmer Hall is a borderline writer on Occultism and belongs to a period when there still weren't any proper academics writing on the subject. Nowadays, I suspect that Hall's work is frowned upon in academic circles. Still, I think that THe Secret Teaching of all Ages is one of the most comprehensive, accessible and interesting books written on the Occult and there is wealth of information to be found there: Dyonisian Architects, Freemasonry (incidentally,it is debatable that Hall was a 33 degree Freemason as some sources state) rosicrucians, Tarot, Yoga etc etc
A very enjoyable and profitable read. | | The Secret Teachings of All Ages (Reader's Edition) by Tarcher The TRUTH Is What Matters | There is no doubt that there is some truth in The Secret Teachings Of All Ages (I have ISBN: 0-89314-540-8) and the Reviews that I've read here. Any honest researcher will not be biased (will he?), therefore, he will investigate other paradigms or at least the most conflicting belief system that is opposed to their own.
Analyze, consult, explore, inquire, investigate, look into, probe, scrutinize and study this: The book of John, the 14th chapter and the 6th verse in the King James Version of the Holy Bible and also in the 1991 edition of the Holy Bible - Master Mason Edition.
Having this book, The Secret Teachings of All Ages(Reader's Edition), is a luxury that I consider myself to have. Also, I believe any researcher - or any person that perceives that they must have a comprehensible, unobstuctive and absolved understanding of the world in which they live in - will or will have a copy of The Secret Teachings Of All Ages.
