| Getting Unstuck: Breaking Your Habitual Patterns & Encountering Naked Reality by Sounds True Stuck with Getting Unstuck | | This cd set from Pema Chodron was a disappointment. It was my first time listening to her, and perhaps my expectations were too high. I will also say that I had just completed listening to a cd lecture series from Richard Rohr titled True Self, False Self, which I considered excellent. Getting Unstuck has honest and useful advice about how to meditate, and how difficult it is to stay focused in this endeavor. Pema Chodron's candor is, for the most part, appreciated and appropriate in this context, although I did not find audience participation to be effective. In fact, I got the rather depressing sense that Pema was in a room filled with paticipants who were, one way or another, victims of abuse, victims of addiction, etc. Strengths of the series was its applied orientation - its emphasis on practice and commitment and the little things that help. Weaknesses include the rather unfortunate (and I'm sure inadvertent) "self help" tone of the proceedings, and the fact that the microphone picked-up Pema's every swallow, every aspiration, every oral/nasal sound combination - distracting! | | Getting Unstuck: Breaking Your Habitual Patterns & Encountering Naked Reality by Sounds True Awesome message... | | This is the first introduction I had to Pema Chodron's work. She presents a much needed teaching with this seminar recording. Regardless of your personal spiritual beliefs, I believe this will help anyone who wants to stop habitual pattens in their life. Pema is charming, soft-spoken, humorous and non-judgemental. I like her style and I plan on picking up more of her work. | | Getting Unstuck: Breaking Your Habitual Patterns & Encountering Naked Reality by Sounds True Defective Recording | This is an advisory not a review of contents. There is a distinct clicking-popping sound on the CDs that I received. For me it is disconcerting and makes it difficult to listen to these recordings. I had the very same problems with Pema's recordings "Don't Bite The Hook." I've tried the CDs in various players and hear the same strange sounds. It is noticeable when Pema speaks.
I assume something is wrong with her microphone attachment but not being an expert can't say for sure. I'm puzzled why these same odd sounds are produced on recordings from two different companies. I wonder why Sounds True and Shambhala Audio release these defective CDs.
If you don't mind "snap, crackle and pop" sounds on your audios I suppose you might give these a try. | | Getting Unstuck: Breaking Your Habitual Patterns & Encountering Naked Reality by Sounds True Getting Unstuck | | One of the best cd's on the topic out there. Would give it 6 stars! | | Getting Unstuck: Breaking Your Habitual Patterns & Encountering Naked Reality by Sounds True Great practical advice for anyone.... | This CD is a great resource for anyone who wants to break their habitual patterns of awareness and experience things at a deeper level. It is meant to be a guide that helps you to deal with automatic thinking and habitual ways of seeing the world. In short, it invites you to become more aware of your compensatory ego personality with all its predictability and surrender to a more present, spontaneous and alive way of connecting with your world. This is a book about being present in the moment and using the "stuff" of daily life as material for spiritual, emotional and psychological transformation.
Pema Chodron is an excellent speaker, has a great sense of humor and a very practical approach that could be applied by ANYONE of ANY faith. This is top notch material and well worth the cost. It stands up well to repeated listening and is simple, but powerful. For other suggestions, see my listmania lists on my profile. | | Getting Unstuck: Breaking Your Habitual Patterns & Encountering Naked Reality by Sounds True Book Description | | An urge comes up, we succumb to it, and it becomes stronger. We reinforce our cravings, habits, and addictions by giving in to them repeatedly. Pema Chödrön guides us through this "sticky feeling" and offers us tools for learning to stay with our uneasiness, soften our hearts toward others, and ourselves and live a more peaceful life in the fullness of the present moment. |
History (beta)
Mike Lee: “As far as the specifics of the announcement itself, I am completely pleased. All the API I was afraid might not be there are there. Integration with Xcode, Interface Builder, and Instruments is more than I could have hoped for.”
I think I read that even Bonjour will be there. (Hope that’s true—it’s still tough to get through to download the SDK, at this writing. No surprise. Patience is indicated.)

Cats Can Has Grammar
Anil Dash: “The rise of these new subspecies of lolcats are particularly interesting to me because ‘I can has cheezeburger?’ has a fairly consistent grammar. I wasn’t sure this was true until I realized that it’s possible to get cat-speak wrong.”

Hivelogic podcast
Dan Benjamin: “Yup, it’s true, I’ve finally gone ahead and recorded my first podcast. I talked with my friend, the famous John Gruber of Daring Fireball, about Macworld 2007 and what we might expect to see there.”

My Dream App
Phillip Ryu: “You’re about to be involved in a revolution in the software industry: a no holds barred, totally transparent and ridiculously low barrier version of Macintosh shareware development. Ever wished you had the programming chops to create a killer app? For the first time, you’re going to have a chance to make those dream apps come true.”

The True Story of Audion
Panic: “I mean, do you ever wonder about the stories behind everyday products? What names were Procter & Gamble considering before they finally picked “Swiffer”? (Springle? Sweepolio? Dirtrocker?)”

Cocoal.icio.us now open source
Sci-Fi Hi-Fi: Weblog: “Good news for anyone who has ever wished Cocoal.icio.us did X or had Y: now you have the power to make your dreams come true (well, your software-related ones anyway). You heard me right: I finally made good on my promise to clean up the Cocoal.icio.us project and open source the code.”

On Software Design: Consistently Inconsistent
Michael Dupuis: “At first blush, you’d look at these two sets of applications and determine that ‘Aqua apps run to the window edges, and Metal apps have borders.’ But herein lies one of the many inconsistencies. While this is true in general, Apple’s Safari (Metal) throws this paradigm out the window and runs its elements to the window edges. DiskUtility however uses the default Aqua theme and has borders.”

The Software Construction Analogy is Broken
kuro5hin: “Our decades of trying to use [the construction analogy] have not taken us very far considering the incredibly bright minds that have been working on it. Instead we have to explicitly recognize the true attributes of software creation: its incredible flexibility, its odd economics, and the remarkable human talents required to create it.”

NetNewsWire 1.0.2b5
This beta fixes the most common newsreader crash, the updateUnreadCount crash—at least, testing so far indicates that this is true. It may not entirely be fixed, so sending us crash logs is always a good idea. More details are on the change notes.

Rumor: Safari tabbed browsing
Perhaps you’ve seen the rumor (with screen shots) that Safari is getting tabbed browsing. Assuming these rumors are true, my hope is that you’ll be able to set a pref that says to open URLs in new tabs (when requests come from other apps such as NetNewsWire).
This way I’ll be able to use NetNewsWire with Safari the same way I use it with Chimera (er, Camino). That is, I read through the news in NetNewsWire, opening URLs as I go—in the background, in new tabs—and then I switch over to Chimera.
By the way, I like the name Camino. (The reason why should be obvious, so I won’t spell it out.)

Rumor: iSite being tested at Apple
I have no idea if it’s true, but it’s an interesting rumor. Spymac reports: “Purportedly, users will have the ability to make their .Mac web page URL redirect to their own computer. If a connection cannot be made (if the computer is turned off, for example) the traditional online version of the site will be displayed from Apple’s servers.”

Cocoa vs. Carbon
Unsanity.org: “I think general users are overrating Cocoa. Why does everybody seem to think that something running on MacOS X would be only good if it’s Cocoa? For some reason, people are getting an impression Carbon is slower, older, and generally unacceptable osx technology made up to ease the transition for existing software. Well, although this is partly true, let me clarify some points about Cocoa and Carbon.”
