Informative

One thing I like about Prof. Lott is that he does not try and be funny. I've read other books by economists and they try to be cute or witty or funny, but jokes usually fall flat.
Prof. Lott sticks to the facts and draws conclusions, and I appreciate that.

Freedomnomics

When I first picked this book up, it was just because I liked John Lott. I did not realize that, in a way, it is is a response to Freakanomics. Freedomnomics is great! Lott makes some great points and has the data to back it up. It's not hard to read either. I finished it in a few days, and I'm normally a fairly slow reader.

Great Read

Great read. Lott is the most thought producing and readable economist on the scene today. He goes places that other writers avoid.

Freedom and Economics

Economics is a controversial topic. People vividly disagree on at least two counts:
- How much can economics explain?
- Do free markets work?
Freedomnomics approaches these questions from a libertarianish, conservative angle.

John Lott thinks economics can shed light on many things. He goes on to show this with investigations into the effects of women's suffrage, legalized abortion and other political decisions. The results are often surprising and probably infuriating to some.

John Lott also believes in the efficacy of free markets. He shows that markets can be quite efficient and fair even in situations where a lot of people think we are getting ripped off. He shows that the inventiveness of market participants often overcomes theoretical market failure.

This is a fun and accessible book for readers curious about economics and society.

Drivel mixed with propaganda.

It's hard to actually take this book seriously, it's so bad. Lott attempts to discredit FREAKONOMICS but fails utterly. The book lacks intellectual rigor and even coherency; it's basically just an opportunity for another of Lott's self justifying rants.

The sections of FREAKONOMICS that Lott uses are carefully culled, twisted and cited out of context to justify his riposite; however the book ends up reeking of "Freedom Fries" and other right-wing neocon propaganda.

Lott actually spends more time and space promoting his own "ideas" than dealing with "FREAKONOMICS. He is:
anti-abortion [somehow abortion causes crime, despite the evidence against this idea]
opposed to womens suffrage [it causes "Big Government" and other conservative evils... How this comes about isn't explained]
opposed to drug price control [it might cause pharma to stop developing new drugs; this argument manages to ignore both the trend to develop lifestyle pharmaceuticals *and* the fact that most drug research is paid for out of taxpayer funds.]
against the secret ballot [it "reduce voters participation" in Lott's world anyway, though noe in the real world. If he's really in favor of voter participation then why not make voting compulsory?]

Anyway that's quite enough of my time wasted on this screed; I'm sure Lott and his army of sockpuppets (fake internet identities) will be along soon.........
