junk

Another piece of rubbish generated by the huge conservative computer buried in an underground vault somewhere in the heart of the country. Totally predictable. Yawn.

Purchased for entertainment only...

...it fulfilled my expectations. I enjoyed what I perceived to be lots of "tongue-in-cheek" humor.

I think some of you dudes oughtta lighten up a bit. Political discussions, especially the ad hominum variety, seem a s/w petty concern to get into a big twist about.

This is one guy's (entertaining) opinions. Dig it for that alone.

Balanced, Informative

This was a well-written, informative book. There is, understandably, some criticism to be given, as others have, in regard to the short descriptions of some of the "100 people"; yet, it is possible to disregard these particular entries in favor of the more substantial entries (which present a well-rounded, fairly balanced commentary on the issues that are "screwing up America").

101 people, you missed one

Bernard, you had me with the title! Who were these people who were screwing up my country? And the publisher had me with the jacket; all pictures of people I knew. What were they doing? The book lives up to its promise with a lively catalog of public silliness by famous people. It's a long overdue chiding of the foot-in-mouth behavior of our media stars in all walks of life - politics, entertainment and the news.

Bernard describes himself as a recovering liberal. He is put off by the excesses of the evolving American culture, as many are. He laments the public acceptance of the "f" word in casual conversation and in entertainment, the celebration of amoral behavior in movies and TV shows like Will & Grace, and the antics of potty-mouth Howard Stern. But mostly he bristles at people who trash and bash his country, a defining theme for an emerging conservative.

In his early chapters, he takes on America Bashers, Hollywood Blowhards, Prime-Time TV Executives, News Executives, Black Culture, Racial Enforcers, White Collar Thugs, Sex Warriors and radical thought leaders. He does so with the rhetorical flair of an angry home-owner watching his neighborhood go downhill - exaggerated, humorous and deliberately self-righteous.

His demonized 100 mostly deserve to be there, although the degree of offence varies widely. Most would agree that they are justly skewered by Bernard's pen, and that it's their comeuppance for being out there in the public eye and pontificating without benefit of thoughtful reflection.

But wait! There's something wrong here. All of Bernard's 100 happen to be left of center in the spectrum of American politics and culture. Could it be that only liberals are screwing up America? Where is Rush Limbaugh, the king of foot-in-mouth conservative talk radio? Where is Bill O'Rielly, the bully of twisted news? Where are Doug Feith, Donald Rumsfeld, and Paul Wolfowitz, the trio of architects of the badly planned invasion of Iraq? Where is Karl Rove, the brain-trust of deceptive politics? Where is Dick Chaney, Mr. Conflict-of Interest? Where is George W. Bush, odds-on favorite for the worst "Decider" in American history?

I would add at least one more name: Bernard Goldberg, who should have called his book "100 Liberals who are screwing up America", who has kept his sense of humor but completely lost his objectivity.

Great Read!

This book was seriously great. I read it all in about six hours. Thought provoking book that got me a bit fired up. This book is especially interesting to read now that Al Franken (#37) is running for Senator in Minnesota.

The number one New York Times bestselling author of Bias delivers another bombshell—this time aimed at . . .

100 People Who Are Screwing Up America

No preaching. No pontificating. Just some uncommon sense about the things that have made this country great—and the culprits who are screwing it up.

Bernard Goldberg takes dead aim at the America Bashers (the cultural elites who look down their snobby noses at "ordinary" Americans) . . . the Hollywood Blowhards (incredibly ditzy celebrities who think they're smart just because they're famous) . . . the TV Schlockmeisters (including the one whose show has been compared to a churning mass of maggots devouring rotten meat) . . . the Intellectual Thugs (bigwigs at some of our best colleges, whose views run the gamut from left wing to far left wing) . . . and many more.

Goldberg names names, counting down the villains in his rogues' gallery from 100 all the way to 1—and, yes, you-know-who is number 37. Some supposedly "serious" journalists also made the list, including the journalist-diva who sold out her integrity and hosted one of the dumbest hours in the history of network television news. And there are those famous miscreants who have made America a nastier place than it ought to be—a far more selfish, vulgar, and cynical place.

But Goldberg doesn't just round up the usual suspects we have come to know and detest. He also exposes some of the people who operate away from the limelight but still manage to pull a lot of strings and do all sorts of harm to our culture. Most of all, 100 People Who Are Screwing Up America is about a country where as long as anything goes, as one of the good guys in the book puts it, sooner or later everything will go.

This is serious stuff for sure. But Goldberg will also make you laugh as he harpoons scoundrels like the congresswoman who thinks there aren't enough hurricanes named after black people, and the environmentalist to the stars who yells at total strangers driving SUVs—even though she tools around the country in a gas-guzzling private jet.

With Bias, Bernard Goldberg took us behind the scenes and exposed the way Big Journalism distorts the news. Now he has written a book that goes even further. This time he casts his eye on American culture at large—and the result is a book that is sure to become the voice of all those Americans who feel that no one is speaking for them on perhaps the most vital issue of all: the kind of country in which we want to live.
